"THE LIEU DAY SWINDLE"
Wee Bob is a driver, he works 5 over 7, dayshift. One week in May Wee Bob noticed he had two public holidays*. He is day off Sunday, Public holiday Monday and Tuesday and working Wed, Thurs, Friday with his rest day Saturday. Wee Bob checks his duties for the week and sees that he had been given shifts both days. He doesn't mind as he will be paid overtime and also he needed the lieu days. Wee Bob decides to take his lieu days at the end of the same week.
Scenario A (Current system)
Wee Bob works both public holidays, works his normal shift Wednesday and takes his lieu days Thursday and Friday.
Scenario B (proposed system)
Wee Bob works Monday and Tuesday as normal days since the union came to an agreement with the management to do away with these two public holidays. He doesn't mind as his union reps said he would get 3 days holiday in their place and would also make money - happy days. So Wee Bob works Monday and Tuesday and takes his 3 floating days Wed, Thurs and Fri.

Wee Bob is a bit confused (and annoyed) by this, he's no mathematician but he can clearly see under the new system he would be losing £40.81!!
*I know the two May public holidays aren’t in the same
week but it makes it easier to explain and doesn’t affect the figures to put
them in the same week :o)
